Stress Test Q & A

What is a stress test?

A stress test is an evaluation of your heart and how well it functions during physical activity. Your heart pumps more vigorously when you exercise, which can better reveal problems with your heart than when you’re at rest. A stress test measures your:

  • Heart rate
  • Respiration
  • Blood pressure
  • Blood flow and electrical activity
  • Perceived exertion and fatigue

At Ani Medical Group, Dr. Ani offers a variety of stress tests. He provides an advanced stress test that uses positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) scans to produce detailed images of your heart and major arteries. This type of stress test provides highly detailed images of your heart and in some cases can eliminate the need for diagnostic cardiac catheterization.

In addition to advanced cardiac stress testing, Dr. Ani also provides traditional testing with echocardiograms and electrocardiograms (ECG or EKG).

Why would I need a stress test?

Dr. Ani performs stress tests to identify the specific problem or condition causing symptoms such as:

  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath

A stress test can also help Dr. Ani to see if your treatments are working or you need additional testing such as a coronary angiogram.

What happens during a stress test?

Dr. Ani gives you specific instructions on how to prepare for your stress test. In most cases, you need to fast for up to four hours before your appointment, although you can continue to take medications unless he tells you to stop.

During an advanced stress test, Dr. Ani provides an intravenous tracer to create clear images with the PET camera. You recline on the PET scanner table, and Dr. Ani takes images of your heart first while it’s at rest. Then, he injects a vasodilator to open your blood vessels and increase your blood flow through the coronary arteries, which mimics what happens when you exercise, and he takes additional images while your heart is “under stress.”

Echocardiograms use similar medications to create images while your heart is at rest and under stress. However, if you have an electrocardiogram, Dr. Ani applies electrodes to your chest which monitor the electrical activity of your heart when you’re at rest or walking on a treadmill.
